This CARES Act Project Gives 3D Printers To Michigan Manufacturers To Make Medical Devices—And A Whole Lot More

The PPE shortage in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for improved resilience and adaptability in U.S. medical supplies manufacturing.  In response, Project DIAMOnD (Distributed, Independent, Agile Manufacturing On Demand), a collaborative effort between 3D printing company, Markforged, and technology advocacy non-profit organization, Automation Alley, was initiated in the state of Michigan.  Funded by the CARES Act, this project has equipped local businesses in Oakland and Macomb counties with 3D printers from Markforged along with ongoing technical support, on the condition that these devices can be repurposed to mass manufacturing of PPE if needed.  Representing the convergence of groundbreaking technology and medical necessity, Project DIAMOnD is expected to spread within the greater Midwest region.
