Cooling anesthesia for intravitreal injections

A new hand-held device which focally cools a region of the eye to provide rapid anesthesia for intravitreal injections is demonstrating superiority to traditional anesthesia methods. Previously, lidocaine-based eye drops were used to reduce pain during injections, however many patients continued to report pain. This method cools the focal region of the eye to -5 degrees C, providing a temporary nerve conduction block while the injection is performed.
